Heroes and Heroines of the Past: American History Part 1 is a fifteen week history curriculum. This curriculum is designed for 1st through 6th grades. Each of the history lessons are divided into two sections, the first page has a larger font and just a basic overview for 1st and 2nd grades. The next section has the same information just more advanced for 3rd through 6th grades. The stories of heroes or heroines of the past contain some reprints of old stories and some by modern authors and are designed for all ages. It is important to learn about the people who made history and these sections allow the student the opportunity to experience living history through stories. There are several direct quotes in this book and many times they have words that are difficult to understand. A definition is next to the word in parentheses. Each week a memory verse is suggested. The verse may be written on a 3 x 5 card in your favorite version. On the fifth lesson of each section the verse for that week is to be recited.

Recommended Resources
At the end of each unit, there are some recommended resources that may be useful to expand the learning experience even more. Teachers are encouraged to preview the resources before giving them to students.

Activities in the Books
To really understand what life was like years ago, history must go beyond words on a page. Recipes must be cooked, games must be played, historical art must be examined, and crafts must be done. Each day there is an activity that brings history to life. Please do not feel that each activity must be completed, there will be days when something must be skipped. Maybe have one evening a week when the recipes are cooked or use one of the games on a rainy day. Please do not feel overwhelmed to fit every activity into every day. The activities should only be done under the supervision of an adult. The cooking and crafts have the potential of being dangerous and every precaution should be followed. Please note: Golden Prairie Press is not responsible for the safety of your students.
The activities in this book include:

    Examining Historical Art

    Games of the Past

    Cook Up Some History

    Sing Some History

    Listen to Some History

    Crafts

    Experiments

Questions, Writing Topics, and Geography
There are also questions to ensure the student is retaining the information presented. Some days there will be writing topics but they may be skipped if necessary or feel free to use your own writing ideas. Scattered through the book are maps and geography questions to help familiarize students with the places mentioned in the text.

Answer Key
The answers to the questions are in the back of each book. The answers to the questions in Sections 1-15 are in the back of Part 1 and Sections 16-30 are in the back of Part 2.

Supplies
You will need pencils, paper, crayons, and standard school supplies to use this book. On the Additional Materials CD there are printable timelines that may be put in a three-ring binder or folder with prongs. Each activity has a list of supplies needed. At the beginning of each week, it is recommended that you preview the upcoming activities to see what supplies are needed that week.

How Long Does it Take to Complete a Lesson?
Each lesson will take about an hour. Some may take longer to complete, especially for the recipes. Other days may take about thirty minutes.

What is the difference between the print and digital versions?
The print version is in black and white. The digital version is in color.

Visit France as Benjamin Franklin during the American Revolution. Cross the continent as Lewis and Clark. Save the painting of Washington as Dolly Madison when the British burn the White House. Discover gold in California at Sutter’s Mill. Travel west as pioneers on the Oregon Trail. Nurse soldiers during the outbreak of the Spanish Influenza during World War I. All these adventures and thirteen more are awaiting the young actor of today! In these short skits, students can jump into the shoes of historical people and bring history to life.

While memorizing the date that Columbus discovered America is important, acting out a skit that shows how he connected with Queen Isabella is quite captivating. In this book there are nineteen historical plays from the time of Columbus to World War II. Some of the short skits call for only three actors while others call for as many as ten.

Do you want to make history come to life?
Performing historical plays is a great way to do that!

Review:
“Historical Skits is a resource that will enrich your school library. Historical facts are embedded into each character’s line in a way that will make history come to life. Your student will internalize what life was like from each character’s point of view. I highly recommend this collection of short plays for a good read or to bring to the stage!”

History Is Not Boring!

What is history anyway? It is the story of real people who did real things. For history to be fun for everyone (even those who think they hate history), it must go beyond hard facts and meaningless dates to the real people who made the significant events happen. People like George Washington, who bravely crossed the partly frozen Delaware River to attack the British at Trenton. Stories like that of the bold Americans who bravely fought against the Barbary pirates during the little-known Barbary War show how interesting history is.

This book covers:

Christ Bearer: Christopher Columbus
Settling the New World
The Lost Colony of Roanoke
The Pilgrims’ Legacy
The Great Awakening
The French and Indian War: The Struggle for Mastery of North America
Freedom Founded
Crossing the Delaware: Turning Point of the Revolution
The Making of a Republic: The Story of the Constitution
To Kentucky and Beyond: America Begins the Push Westward
To the Shores of Tripoli: The Barbary Coast Wars
The Lewis & Clark Expedition
Miracle at New Orleans
The Second Great Awakening
Daniel Webster: Defender of the Constitution
The Mexican War: America Expands in the Southwest
The Oregon Trail: Road to the American Promised Land
The Pony Express: Uniting the East and West
A Tale of Two Generals: Biographies of General Lee and General Grant
The Spanish American War
The Klondike Gold Rush
The Great War: America in the First World War
The Legacy of Alvin York: American Hero of the First World War
The Great Depression
The Navajo Code Talkers

True History Is Exciting!

Here are some of the stories in this book:

Discover how the U.S. created the Constitution

Experience the miraculous victory at the Battle of New Orleans

Explore America’s expansion west

Uncover one of America’s best weapons used during World War II

This book is great for:

History Buffs

Those who want the story behind the event

Adults who want a snapshot view of American history

Homeschool families, either as a read aloud or for students 12 and up

In this 184 page book you will meet some of America’s most famous people like George Washington and some of her not so famous people like Daniel Webster. Click here to see the table of contents. There are also four bonus chapters! The first bonus chapter is about famous mothers and the next three are about famous explorers.

Bonus Chapters:

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle: Mothers Who Changed the World Through Their Children

Medieval Explorer: Marco Polo

Evangelistic Explorer: David Livingstone

Daring Explorer of Antarctica: Robert Falcon Scott

What others are saying about Uncover Exciting History

“Amy Puetz always finds the ‘story’ to tell about her person or event in history.” -Dr. Ruth Beechick

“How did a pirate help Americans win the Battle of New Orleans? How did a conscientious objector capture 132 Germans? Who developed a code language that was never broken during WWII?
“Story-telling is the greatest way to excite people about history, and Amy Puetz loves to tell stories. With vocabulary suited to middle-grade children, the whole family will enjoy Uncover Exciting History as they gather ’round for family reading time. Each six-page story closes with Digging Deeper, a selection of discussion questions and project ideas to personalize the story. Period photos and maps enhance the book even more. Uncover Exciting History is a great resource for Christian families and those who yearn to see God’s hand behind American history.”
-Marcia Washburn Building Tomorrow’s Generation at marciawashburn.com

“Amy Puetz has a gift for history. Avoiding the dryness of excessive detail, Amy brings out the essence of other times and distant places, taking us along on the journey to meet famous generals, intrepid explorers, and common, everyday people who made their mark on our world. This collection of sketches isn’t meant to be an in-depth study of world history. Instead, you’ll find the collection a great way to introduce the reluctant historian in your family to the excitement and drama of the past. Short enough to be read easily and quickly, yet informative enough to give your kids a good overview of historical events, these narratives are the perfect way to whet your children’s appetites for learning about history. Even better, they’re written from a Christian perspective, giving your children an appreciation for God’s providential hand in world history. Highly recommended!”

To really understand what life was like years ago, history must go beyond words on a page. Recipes must be cooked, games must be played, historical art must be examined, and crafts must be done. Each day there is an activity that brings history to life.

This is a thirty-week history curriculum. Along with the historical information, there are exciting stories about historical people. There is a beginner section for first and second grades and a more advanced section for third through sixth grades. Included in the text are activities that go along with each lesson–examine historical art, sing some historical songs, cook up some historical recipes, or play historical games. There are also numerous crafts and other hands-on projects.

There are also questions to ensure the student is retaining the information presented. Some days there will be writing topics, but they may be skipped if necessary or feel free to use your own writing ideas. Scattered throughout the book are maps and geography questions to help familiarize students with the places mentioned in the text. An answer key is provided in the back of the book.

On the Additional Materials CD, there are printable timelines that may be put in a three-ring binder or folder with prongs. Also included are audio pronunciations. Each activity has a list of supplies needed. At the beginning of each week, it is recommended that you preview the upcoming activities to see what supplies are needed that week.

How to Use This Curriculum

Activities in the Books

Sing Some Ancient History

Listen to Some Ancient History

Crafts

Experiments

Questions, Writing Topics, and Geography
There are also questions to ensure the student is retaining the information presented. Some days there will be writing topics, but they may be skipped if necessary or feel free to use your own writing ideas. Scattered throughout the book are maps and geography questions to help familiarize students with the places mentioned in the text.

Answer Key
The answers to the questions are in the back of each book. The answers to the questions in Weeks 1–15 are in the back of Part 1 and Weeks 16–30 are in the back of Part 2.

Recommended Resources
There are some recommended resources that may be useful to expand the learning experience even more. Teachers are encouraged to preview the resources before giving them to students.

Supplies
You will need pencils, paper, crayons, and standard school supplies to use this book. On the Additional Materials CD there are printable timelines that may be glued or taped together. Each activity has a list of supplies needed. At the beginning of each week, it is recommended that you preview the upcoming activities to see what supplies are needed that week.

How Long Does it Take to Complete a Lesson?
Each lesson will take about 30-60 minutes to complete.

Bible References
Since the Bible is full of history, many passages from it are quoted directly in the text of this book. The King James Version of the Bible is used, but please feel free to use a different version if you wish. The Bible verses are easy to find in the text because they are in italics.

Alternate Reading Suggestions for Younger Students
Some stories from ancient history are rather graphic and although every effort has been made to sanitize them for children, there are still some stories that might frighten sensitive children. The story might include a cruel death or other harsh events. For these stories an alternate reading is suggested. Teachers are encouraged to preview these stories before reading them to younger students. There are nine lessons with alternate reading suggestions. They are on pages: 45, 67, 70, 109, 114, 117, 178, 181, and 310.

What comes in the Curriculum Package?
Heroes, Heroines, and Tales of Ancient History Part 1 – 75 Lessons for the first half of the year.
Heroes, Heroines, and Tales of Ancient History Part 2 – 75 Lessons for the second half of the year.
